Jubilee Orpington

Jubilee Orpington

The Jubilee Orpington is a beautiful and rare variety of the Orpington breed, known for its striking plumage and calm, friendly temperament. It was developed in the UK in the late 19th century to celebrate the Diamond Jubilee of Queen Victoria, and it features a rich mix of colors, including deep mahogany, gold, and black.

Key Features:

  • Appearance: The Jubilee Orpington has a stunning appearance with a blend of rich mahogany, golden, and black feathers. Their feathers are soft and dense, giving them a round, full-bodied appearance. They have a broad, deep body, and their bright red comb and wattles complete their regal look.

  • Size: Jubilee Orpingtons are large birds, with hens typically weighing around 7-8 lbs and roosters about 8-10 lbs. Their solid build and heavy feathering give them an impressive and majestic presence.

  • Egg Production: Jubilee Orpingtons are consistent layers, producing about 180-220 medium to large brown eggs per year. While not the highest producers compared to other breeds, their beautiful eggs and overall charm make them a popular choice for ornamental and productive flocks.

  • Temperament: Known for their docile, friendly, and calm nature, Jubilee Orpingtons are easy to handle and get along well with other chickens. They are often described as "gentle giants" and are ideal for families or those new to chicken keeping.

  • Hardiness: Like other Orpington varieties, the Jubilee Orpington is a hardy breed, well-suited to both cold and moderate climates. Their dense feathering provides insulation against the cold, and they can tolerate warmer temperatures as long as they have access to shade and water.

Summary:

The Jubilee Orpington is a majestic and rare breed known for its beautiful plumage of mahogany, gold, and black feathers. They are friendly, calm, and easy to handle, making them great pets for families and beginner chicken keepers. With moderate egg production and hardy resilience, they are a stunning addition to any backyard flock.
